Why Spokane’s wildfires are a warning for the West
Three devastating wildfires tore through neighborhoods in and around Spokane, Washington, over the weekend of August 1, 2026, destroying at least 600 homes and forcing tens of thousands to flee, including patients from a Veterans Affairs medical centre. The blazes, which continue to burn, have exposed a troubling trend: the relentless march of housing into fire-prone landscapes, combined with a warming climate and decades of misguided forest management, is turning once rare disasters into a grim new normal for the American West.
Forecasters had issued a rare 'particularly dangerous situation' warning the day before the fires broke out, the first such alert in Washington state history. This was no ordinary red flag warning. It signalled an extreme and hazardous event, and the conditions that followed were catastrophic. Dry, windy weather converged in the wildland-urban interface, where homes are built into forests and grasslands. The result was a firestorm that consumed over 8,000 acres by August 3, with no end in sight.
What caused the extreme fire behaviour?
The Spokane Complex Fire was the product of a rare and dangerous convergence of factors. A historic snow drought in 2026 left forests parched weeks earlier than normal. Snowpack, nature’s reservoir, failed to store winter precipitation, leaving trees under prolonged water stress. Spring rains, however, spurred a growth of grasses and shrubs, which then dried under scorching summer temperatures, creating a continuous fuel bed. When a dry cold front swept in on August 1, bringing winds of up to 45 mph and low humidity, the stage was set for explosive fire growth.
By August 3, more than 44,000 wildfires had burned over 5 million acres across the United States in 2026, well above the 10-year average. This included fires that claimed the lives of three firefighters in Utah and Colorado. The Spokane fires, however, were particularly destructive because they burned in the wildland-urban interface, where homes and businesses are interspersed with flammable vegetation. This allowed fire to spread from structures to vegetation and back again, amplifying the devastation.
Are more homes at risk from wildfires?
Research by fire scientists and climatologists shows that more American homes are being exposed to wildfire risk. A recent study found that 462,069 homes were within the boundaries of large wildfires from 2001 to 2020 across the contiguous United States. Two-thirds of these were in the West, where the number of exposed homes increased sixfold over that period. Home survivability, the fraction of homes within wildfire boundaries that were not damaged, declined by 12 per cent.
This trend is driven by three factors: the rapid expansion of housing into the wildland-urban interface, with 15 million new homes added from 1990 to 2020; worsening wildfire behaviour due to drought, warming temperatures and changing precipitation patterns; and a dangerous accumulation of fuel in forests, a legacy of decades of fire suppression that has allowed dead vegetation to build up.
What can be done to reduce fire risk?
Wildfires are a natural part of the North American landscape, particularly in the West. Historically, low-intensity fires periodically cleared away low-lying vegetation. But with more people living in fire-prone areas, fires have been quickly suppressed, allowing fuel to build up. Combined with a warming climate, this has enhanced the risk of larger blazes.
Communities and homeowners can take steps to reduce the risk. At the landscape scale, prescribed burning and forest thinning can reduce the likelihood of fast-moving, high-severity fires. At the community scale, wildfire protection plans can map vulnerable neighbourhoods, prioritise fuel treatments, and improve evacuation corridors and emergency alerts. At the individual level, home hardening, such as fixing roofs and windows to prevent ember entry, and creating defensible space around homes, can reduce the probability of fire reaching a structure.
These measures will not guarantee safety, but they can help reduce damage and save lives. For the Spokane region, and for the wider West, the message is clear: the old ways of managing fire and building homes must change, or the warnings will only grow more dire.
