Wladimir Klitschko's heartbreaking promise to daughter Kaya after Hayden Panettiere's death
The former heavyweight boxing champion has broken his silence following the death of his former fiancée, Hayden Panettiere, vowing that their 11-year-old daughter will always know the woman her mother truly was.
Klitschko, 50, described the actress's passing at just 36 as a tragedy that has left his family in a state of profound shock. Panettiere, best known for her roles in Heroes and Nashville, died on Sunday, her father Skip confirming the news and speaking of an unimaginable loss.
A love story that spanned a decade
The couple first met at a book launch in 2009, beginning a relationship that would endure multiple separations and reconciliations. After an initial split in 2011, they rekindled their romance two years later, with Klitschko proposing in October 2013. Their daughter Kaya was born the following year.
By 2018, however, the relationship had run its course once more. In a decision that Panettiere later described as heartbreaking, she relinquished full custody of Kaya to Klitschko, who raises their daughter in his native Ukraine.
Klitschko's tribute to the mother of his child
Writing on Instagram, the Ukrainian boxing great paid tribute to a woman he insisted was far more than a former partner.
Hayden was, although no longer my partner, an important part of my life and the mother of our daughter, Kaya. She built an incredible career through immense talent, while also facing the darker sides of a very demanding industry. Nothing will erase the times we shared or the place she had in our lives.
His most poignant words were reserved for Kaya, now 11. To our daughter Kaya, I will always speak of her mother with respect and make sure she remembers the person she was, he wrote.
The final interview and a mother's love
Just last month, in what proved to be her last published interview, Panettiere spoke openly about the difficult decision to hand custody to Klitschko. She told parenting outlet Momé that it was not a choice she made lightly, but one born of necessity.
I knew I needed to be able to put her first so that I could get the help I needed and be the mum she needed me to be. I love my daughter, and I'm so proud of the young woman she is becoming. She's like a mini-me.
Panettiere had long battled post-partum depression and addiction, struggles she addressed publicly with a candour that won her admiration. Her decision to step back from custody was, by her own account, an act of maternal love rather than abandonment.
A life cut tragically short
Klitschko, regarded as one of the finest heavyweights of his generation, concluded his statement with a plea for privacy and a simple farewell: Rest easy, Hayden. May you find eternal peace.
The tragedy serves as a reminder that even those who seem to have the world at their feet can be fighting battles invisible to the public eye. For a young girl growing up in Ukraine, the loss of her mother will be a burden she carries for life, but her father has made a solemn promise that she will know the woman who gave her life.
