Wright Bins World Championship Trophies After Littler Inspiration
Two-time World Darts Championship winner Peter Wright has revealed how teenage sensation Luke Littler inspired him to throw out all his hard-earned trophies in a desperate bid to recapture his former glory.
The 55-year-old Scotsman, known as 'Snakebite' for his theatrical entrances and colourful mohican hairstyles, claimed world titles in 2020 and 2022. Yet Wright confessed that watching young Littler's meteoric rise prompted him to bin his silverware collection in an extraordinary act of sporting reinvention.
"Luke Littler is the best thing I've ever seen on TV," Wright told the PDC. "That's why he has inspired me to get my finger out. I have got rid of all my trophies, got rid of all my darts, so I can start afresh."
Wright's dramatic gesture reflects the seismic impact 'Cool Hand Luke' Littler has had on the sport since his stunning World Championship final appearance in 2024. The teenager's brilliance has clearly rattled established stars, with Wright admitting his recent performances have been "terrible."
Struggling to Keep Pace
Despite his radical approach, Wright remains well off the pace of darts' elite performers. Currently languishing at 30th in the PDC Order of Merit, the former world champion faces an uphill battle to reclaim his place among the sport's aristocracy.
"I've been playing rubbish all year," Wright acknowledged with characteristic bluntness. "All their eyes are on the two Lukes and Gezzy [Price], so that's good. I think I prefer that, to be honest."
Wright's first-round opponent at Alexandra Palace will be Noa-Lynn van Leuven, where bookmakers tip the veteran to progress. However, his recent form suggests even that victory cannot be taken for granted.
Championship Ambitions Remain
Despite his struggles, Wright maintains belief in his ability to mount another championship challenge. The Scotsman's track record at Alexandra Palace suggests he could yet spring surprises, having knocked out then-reigning champion Luke Humphries twelve months ago.
"I think I can win it again," Wright declared, displaying the confidence that helped secure his two world titles. Whether ditching his trophy collection proves the catalyst for renewed success remains to be seen.
For British darts fans, Wright's plight serves as a reminder of sport's unforgiving nature, where even world champions can find themselves scrambling to keep pace with emerging talent like the remarkable Luke Littler.
